A Hainam Nang Speaks to A Hokkien Lang In English

Malaysian Chinese are good at languages and dialects. Most of us speak English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and dialects like Hokkien, Cantonese, Hainanese, Teochew etc...... Even if we don't speak other dialects we could understand roughly what other trying to say.

I remember a joke told by my friend about an experience her Hainanese mother encountered. It happened many years ago.

One day her mother went to a shop in Port Dickson to buy a badminton racket for her. She told her mother she wanted the brand "Blue Bird", in English. The mother not knowing what is the meaning of 'Blue Bird' told the shopkeeper the same thing the daughter told her.

The Hokkien shopkeeper who unable to speak english and hainanese, asked her twice in Hokkien : "Lam Chiau Piau"? (Blue Bird brand?). He was trying to reconfirm with her what she actually wanted.

'Lam chiau' means 'blue bird' but it sounds close to the word penis in hokkien and I think may be in hainanese dialect also.

The mother was very angry with the shopkeeper and scolded him for being rude to her before she left the shop angrily. She was still angry when she reached home and told the daughter what had happened. The daughter told her the actual meaning of 'Blue Bird' and they were laughing away.

Indian Rojak

This is Rojak. Indian Rojak. The famous Indian Rojak from Subang Jaya. As nice as the Rojak at my home town in Telok Kemang when I was young.
.
This is the only Indian Rojak that i really eat and eat and never get fed up of it. Don't tell me about other rojak. I've been conned (LOL not so serious la!) into trying at so many places but none can compare to this one.
.
The most important thing is the sauce. Really yummy.
The cucumber and the turnip are freshly shredded, very fresh.
All those fried things I don't know what to call it, very nice.
and the freshly fried toufu.
.
You can add hard boiled egg or cuttlefish, but I prefer it plain.
.
I usually eat there because next to it there is a Cendul stall. Cendul when buy back home wont be nice anymore, so have to eat there. But today I bought it back because the Cendul stall is not there. So buy back and eat at the comfort of my home.
.
When I first spotted this Rojak stall, there were a long line of people waiting and eating under the trees with birds and crows above. I was hesitating to eat there. But because it's very yummy, I sometime can drive there alone and join in the crowd.
.
Today I waited for more than 1/2 hours to get this plate of yummy Rojak for my tea time.
.
Oh one advice for those who wants to eat there. Make sure you don't look else where while eating. Stare at your plate until you finished all, otherwise the birds and crows may add some droppings in. HA HA HA HA HA

1 fine evening before my 2 sons go to bed; we sat down for a chat.
.
We talked about how 3 of us going to face the big, big world in the near future as I am getting old and if they don't grow up quickly, I am not sure how they're going to survive without me. I can’t be with them 4 ever.
.
My elder son said:"Don't worry mummy, we'll be 5."
.
But then I told him, "We need to eat, place to stay, household utilities, education........., and how if one of us get 6, we need money to see a doctor."
.
My son: "Mummy, you have a total of 7 brothers and sisters; don't tell me none of them could help us?"
.
"Yes, may be they could, but we can’t depend on others, we must do our own growing. Have you heard of a saying: Don't help by giving a fish everyday but instead teach them how to fish?"
.
My younger son, too small to understand:" Mummy, if they think fish is too expensive to give, they can give us 8. I can eat that everyday with rice, bread or just plain."
.
"That’s good idea, darling, you're very smart. Good 9."
.
Went back to my room. 10 god for being so kind to me.
.
ZZZZzzzzzzz.

Spahgetti, Anyone?

Had spaghetti for lunch today! No choice! No choice! The reason is I cooked too much. Sooo greedy!
.
Usually I cook spaghetti for my children or for my guests and i'll have something else.
.
I have the button mushroom cut into big pieces. That's why home cook is special. You can do what you like and don't do what you don't like.
.
I love cheese but didn't add in cheese because my tummy cannot tolerate cheese, strange!
.
Oh, delicious! Self praise is no praise. Too bad, no judges here and you cant judge from the look.
.
Ingredients?
.
1 bottle of Preggo Spaghetti Sauce
5 big tomatos
5 big onions
1 can button mushroom
RM5.00 mince meat
1/2 bowl chopped garlic
1 small bowl tomato sauce
Olive Oil
Salt & pepper
.
(No sugar, no cheese, no red/green pepper/bassil leave already in the sauce)
.
Each time I plan a party at home, I’ll cook spaghetti. Although each time no matter how much I cooked, my guests would finish all but I still feel that my spaghetti sauce needs some improvement.
.
Is there anything that I should or shouldn’t add in? Any tips please!
.
Any one willing to share the secret of your delicious spaghetti sauce?
.

My Weekend

Went to pick up my girlfriend from KEN lll for a get together with other Single Mummy.

After the gathering we went for the HP sale.
.
Couldn't get the monitor I wanted. But I didn't come back empty handed. That's my tradition to at least buy something small whenever i go for sale. At most of the Sales there're some small and cheap items to lure my money. That's why i always go for sale without much cash in my purse, because below certain amount they don't accept credit card, then i can save up my money. If I found something really worth buying i would normally use credit card if they accept it without charging me extra.
.
This stretegy has helped me saved some unnecessary spending but also caused me some unnecessary time spent to look for an ATM machine when i found something worth buying which can only pay by cash.
I bought 2 mouse pads each came with a hand rest. That's what i have been looking for. Although that's not exactly what I wanted, but it's good enough.
.

Can you see that cute little red ladybird in the picture? That's a vacuum cleaner for the computer. It came with 2 batteries. Not sure whether it works, I'm lazy to try it out now.
.
Each item is only RM5.00. So i spent only RM15.00 that day. I don't know how long these things going to lie around in my house, after all there's always a rubbish bin to collect the rubbish i bought.

I May Be Small, But My Aim Is High. HA HA HA

Guess what I’ve been doing lately?
.
That’s my business, right? Why bother, right? *sigh* *sigh* *sigh*
.
Anyway, no body could have guess that because I am such a small fly in this earth. That's not important; the important thing is I've chipped in to help the world. I was not doing anything really big but something in a small way to save this earth.
.
I went for the 'Save The Earth' workshop again and this time I’ve a better picture of how the
'GABBAGE ENZYME' (GE) could help save ME, my children, my country and the whole world.
.
I am not only making for my own use and to cool my house, I also have a mission to full fill. That's in December 2008; there will be a group of people including me coming together with the enzyme we made. We are going to gather in one of the river in Klang area and throw the GE into the river.
(Read up how this way could save the fish and water life). That's just one of the places we are going, there are more to come in the future. Let's join hand to save our dearest planet!! Make the GE now!
.

I was busy going around telling friends how to make GE and asked them to go to the link to find out how to do GE and its usage. Some may thank me for it but some may think that I was wasting my time; I am too small to help save the earth. What a small thinking!
.
*sigh* *sigh* *sigh*
.
This is the 2nd bottle 'GE' I am making.
First and 2nd bottle :
This is going to be my 3rd GE 'manufacturing' container.
After that I will start my gardening in a big way!
.

Looking forward to see my blooming, beautiful garden? He He He!!!

Every Time Is The Last Time

Surely some of you going to drop jaw when you see what I did to my body and tummy last Sunday. I've promised my body that's the last time I'm going to ill treat my tummy. But ...Promises are meant to be broken. Hehehe

.

My friend drop by so we decided to eat out the whole day :

.

9.00 am - Had 'Nasi Lemak' (santan rice) with fried chicken (Er..full of oil) and a cup of 'teh tarik'.

.

1.00 pm - Had 'Curry Laksa' and 'ice-kachang' at the lane behind Petaling Street. I didn't take photo because there were too many people around. Next time I will take one to tempt the Laksa lover. It's soooo yummy. Forgot all about cholesterol.

.

That's my favourite place for 'Laksa'. If ever I go to petaling street, is a must for me to eat that. My children and most friends wont want to accompany me there because that place is near to the wet market, so usually I would go alone. But this friend of mine didn't mind. I was happy to know that she enjoyed it, and promised to go with me again.

.

3.30 pm - Went for durian. The RM4.00 per kilo stall has sold out. Ended up at the other stall. Only the RM8.00 per kg was available, too expensive for me. Took two and shared with my friend. It cost us RM32.00. Only 5 pulps in each fruits but big pulp with tiny seed. Not only the price is higher, the quality is much, much higher than the RM4.00 ones. We didnt forget to bring back 2 husks for drinking water with it at home to avoid heatiness.

5.00 pm - Went for Hokkien fried noodle at Subang Jaya SS15 town centre. Not bad, a lot of lard in it. Hehehe!
.

6.30 pm - My friend has 30% discount voucher at Baskin Robbins. We decided not to waste that offer. I had one with cup and my friend had one with cone, yummy, yummy...

Had 4 stick of 'satay' or sate (chunks of meat in skewer grilled or barbecued over a wood or charcoal fire), for supper.

At night I felt the durian's heat coming up in my body. Hot, hot, hot! Have to stay in my room, switched on the air-con to coooool down!

Taking The King Home

Any one tried KING OF THE FRUITS (Durians) with rice before? I have not tried and will never want to although I love durian To me it should be taken alone when it's fresh. According to my friend it's her favourite. Er..eh.. wanna try?
.
Last week I went to buy durian for the first time this year. I was not sure where to get the real good one, that's why I didnt buy. Ha ha, it sounded like so difficult to buy durian when there are stall popping up in every corner of the street, by the roadside, at the market, in the morning, at night....... That was because I have many experiences where I bought some durian and many come with it were either with worms or of lower grade. The taste are very different if you get some lousy one.
.
Mmmm...now I have found a place to get good durian at Subang Jaya, will definitely go back for more. This is the first time all the durian bought were eaten up and nothing left to keep in the fridge for days like before.
.
It's cheap, per kg was only RM4.00 and for 12 pcs of good grade durian only cost less then RM50.00. Most important thing is the smell, taste and texture are perfect, ooooh the rich aroma, succulent and firm flesh, a perfect mixed of bitter and sweet taste, mmmm....first class!

To people who don't like durian smell is stinking, but for me and many others who love it it's heavenly!
.
Do you know there are so many types of durian. To me is just the name, so long as it's nice, who cares what name is it. Anyway some of the name I can remember are : D24, 101, XO etc....... See, and there are more and more branded durian coming up these days.
.
Don't know what is DURIANs ?
.
Durians grow in trees.
.
Durians are fruit with spike like hedgehog.
.
Durians produced in Malaysia are the best
.
Durians should never be used to attack someone.
.
Durians are not poisonous.
.
Durians are best when fresh.
.
Durians only fall at night...so never walk under a durian tree at night and never try to catch a falling durian.
.
Durian trees are very tall...15m-40m. ·
.
Durians are banned in some countries.
.
Durians are not allowed into hotel room.
.
Durians are enjoyed by people who enjoy good food.
.
Durians smell heavenly·
.
Durians are the king of the fruits.
.
Durians are for eating, not for kicking at all!
.
Lastly, some secrets when buy Durians. Go for branded, there will be less chances to get the lousy one and open you eyes bigger so the durian seller thought you know how to choose a durian ..... follow my advice, you will return home smiling.

I Think I Have A Sixth Sense

My lady boss whom I have worked for 20+ years passed away peacefully last week. She was 96 years old. She had a fall and was lying in bed for almost 5 years. I felt strangely tired and weak in the morning of that day. When her son called me to inform me that she was in critical condition, I told him I could only go the second morning because I was not feeling well and was feeling weak.
.
I went to her house the next morning. Felt a little sad, my tears rolled down uncontrollably when I saw her body lying there covered up. Why, why did I cry? I always think that it’s better not to linger around this world too long. It does give some pressure to someone closely related especially when the memory and consciousness are gone. Am I being selfish to think like that?
.
I didn't attend her funeral. That was because I went to attend my sister’s father-in-law’s funeral. He passed away on Thursday morning and the funeral was at 10.00 am Saturday morning also.
.
I would want to avoid going to any of the funeral because I felt uneasy in those places. I am scared of something I couldn't see. LOL. I believe that a lot of those unseen wanderers took the advantage of the situation to come by visiting. .... A r e.. y o u.. t h e r e?

I went to my sister’s house on Thursday night, when I came back at about 11.00 pm, my right hand side neighbor’s cute doggy was barking at me very fiercely as I entered the gate. He had never done that because he knows me very well. I was a little stunned I stood there and asked the doggy - "Why are you barking at me?" But he continued barking, very fiercely. I felt strange so I did the best thing I could do, chanting..... before I went in to my house. Don’t laugh, who knows what’s going on, only the god and the dog knew and they could only signal me. Well thank you god for alerting!
.
My father passed away in 1987. Continuously for few years he came into my dream. Sometimes I dream of him alive talking, sometimes I dream of his funeral, but the funeral in the dream was different from the actual one. Someone told me that's because he had a request but nobody could tell me how or what to do about it. That was when I started going into Buddhism seriously. I started learning chanting and prayer for my father.
.
After my eldest brother-in-law passed away, a big moth, looked old and worn out, like it's been flying a long distance, came into my office. Although I felt a little scared, I stared at the butterfly, guessing in my heart , "are you my brother-in-law, what do you want?" There's no answer. After that, continuously for a few years, I had dream of my brother-in-law still living like normal, but never about his funeral.

So, on one of the 15th day of the seventh month of Chinese calendar - the ghost's month, I asked my sister’s permission and gave my brother-in-law's name to a temple to do some prayer for him. My sister also did some necessary for him at a temple in Singapore. After that he stopped coming into my dream, I hope his request is full filled.
.
Am I normal? Or ....? Hei, dont think funny, ok!
